One install, hour by hour

Dust sheets down
Two fitters arrive, cover the floor and furniture, and set up a platform outside. No scaffold on most single storey roofs.

Old roof off
The polycarbonate sheets and glazing bar caps come off and go straight onto the van for recycling. The frame is checked and cleaned.

Panels in
The made to measure panels are bedded into the existing bars, sealed and capped. The roof light goes in the second bay.

Trims, flashings and gutters finished, the room hoovered and the dust sheets lifted. The heating goes back on that evening.

How much does it cost to replace a conservatory roof with insulated panels?
Most homes pay between £3,000 and £7,500. A small lean-to of up to 12 m² starts from about £3,000, a medium Edwardian of 12 to 25 m² from about £4,000, and a large or P-shaped conservatory from about £5,000. The full price guide breaks it down by style and size.
Can you put insulated panels on my existing conservatory frame?
Usually, yes. Insulated panels are light enough for most existing frames, so they sit in the existing uPVC or aluminium frame in place of the polycarbonate or glass sheets. The surveyor checks the frame, the glazing bars and the dwarf walls before anything is ordered.
How long does fitting take?
A lean-to or small Edwardian is normally done in one day. Medium roofs take one to two days and large or P-shaped roofs two to three. You can stay at home throughout and the room is usable again the same evening each day.
Do I need planning permission or building regulations approval?
Planning permission is rarely needed because the size and shape of the conservatory do not change. Building regulations are different: once more than a quarter of the roof is solid, the conservatory usually stops being exempt, so building control has to sign the roof off. Will the room be darker?
A little, yes, which is also why it stops overheating. Most people add one or two glazed roof lights to keep a patch of sky, and the side windows still let plenty of daylight in. LED spotlights can be built into the ceiling for the evenings.
Do the panels stop the noise of rain?
Yes. Rain on thin polycarbonate sounds like a drum. The insulated core of a panel soaks up the sound, so heavy rain becomes a soft patter you can talk over.
